U OKRAINA / BORDERLAND

‘U okraina’ is a Point of View multimedia piece based in the videos shot by Paolo Ciregia while following the crisis of the detachment of Crimea and its annexation to Russia, and also in the Donbass region of East Ukraine. The title comes from the ancient Slavic word u okraina and means borderland. As if the word contained the seeds of today’s crisis, the root of a war that is tearing apart the country. Its fate had been written in its name.
On these sites lay the causes of civil unrest, which nearly lead to war. The Euromaidan protests exploded in 2013 with public protests in Maidan Nezalezhnosti («Independence Square») in Kiev demanding closer European integration. It is known as the 2014 Ukkraine revolution.
